From Childhood Stories to UC Berkeley: Supporting a Young Dream

When people think about campaigns on PavelAndreev.ORG, they usually imagine urgent medical cases, life-saving treatment, and battles for survival. But there are other causes that matter deeply — causes connected to a different kind of future.

That is the story of Monika, a young Bulgarian woman accepted into the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley — one of the most prestigious journalism programs in the world. A place known for preparing the people who will one day tell the stories that shape society.

Her journey began long before the application process.

As a child, Monika spent her summers inventing stories, creating small performances, and writing for hours. Over time, this childhood passion evolved into a serious interest in journalism, cinema, visual anthropology, and the powerful impact that both told and untold stories can have on communities and public life.

After graduating from the American University in Bulgaria in 2023, she continued developing her skills and pursuing creative work until the moment that changed the direction of her future: her acceptance into UC Berkeley.

But like many opportunities of this scale, there was a difficult reality standing between the dream and its realization — funding.

Despite earning two scholarships, Monika still needed €13,000 to begin and complete the two-year program. That was the moment she made the difficult decision to ask for public support.

It is a decision many people postpone out of fear, discomfort, or the feeling that their dream is “not important enough” to deserve help.

But education is also a cause. And an important one.

Especially when it comes to young people who want to return home and use what they have learned to contribute back to their communities.

“I believe that sometimes it is important to give people the opportunity to become part of something that truly matters to you,” Monika wrote in her campaign.

And people responded.

Although the amount raised through the platform remained below the original goal, the campaign became an example of something much bigger: when someone has the courage to openly share their dream, others are often willing to believe in it too.

At the end of the campaign, Monika announced that thanks to additional private donations, she had successfully secured the full amount needed for her education.

“I am incredibly happy that this step is now a reality, and I cannot wait to return to Bulgaria and prove that your support truly mattered,” she shared.

She also expressed special gratitude to ALI and Projector Plus for supporting and inspiring her over the past two years.

This story matters not only because it has a happy ending, but because it reminds us that support should not exist only in moments of survival.
