My name is Ivan Atanasov, originally from Plovdiv. I am a student at the University of Sofia and in my free time I do various sports including mountaineering and mountaineering.

On the 1st of August two of us were supposed to go to the Alps, but then my friend had financial problems and left 9 days later. I went alone and during those 9 days I prepared for the routes we had planned. I did conditioning in Austria on peaks around 3700-3800m and continued to Switzerland.

My accident happened on the 8th of August on Piz Bernina 4048 meters. I get to the top and sit down to rest and refuel. I lose consciousness and wake up 15 days later in a Swiss hospital, the last thing I remember is being at the top and relaxing to rest. I guess I have developed altitude sickness and without feeling it and very quickly. The jeepies device shows how I was moving downwards in a completely different direction and at one point it's as if I jumped off the edge and start sliding 150 meters down unconscious and free fall upside down on snow boulders and sheer rock to a crack in the ice, that's why the main injuries and injuries are to my head,brain and cervical area.

There are many factors but the most basic is my stupidity of being alone, being unprotected, not having a helmet on at the time, being dehydrated. My condition was extremely critical. Two people we met on the summit saw me fall and signalled the Swiss pps, a helicopter came, picked me up and took me to the Swiss hospital in the town of Hur where the doctors were fighting for my life, it wasn't sure if they were going to save me but they did everything they could there and with a lot of luck not only saved my life but I would say I'm in a decent condition at the moment.

My stay in hospital is from 8 August to 5 September 2024, after which I am airlifted to Bulgaria and a personal medical assistant travels with me. From Sofia I am taken by ambulance to St George's Hospital in Plovdiv, where I spend a few more days and finally my mum takes me home where I continue to receive treatment.
Subsequently, they send me various invoices from Switzerland. One from the helicopter company, which was covered by the public insurance company KVG. The hospital stay itself was covered by the European Health Card. A deductible fee is still required for the treatment, but it is something like 1000 leva, which I can pay. The last fee is the one that this campaign is about, namely for a personal medical assistant during my transportation. Unfortunately, neither the European Health Card nor the KVG cover this fee because it is for my transportation and not for my emergency treatment. At that time this was the only possible method for me to return to Bulgaria and was organised by the hospital itself.

I am currently trying through this foundation and through the municipality through a one-off grant to cover this fee. My condition to date is fine, I have post-traumatic hydrocephalus, at the moment my neurosurgeon at St. Ivan Rilski" is advising me to wait because I have no severe symptoms except headache and if the situation does not get better they will operate me by putting a shunt to control the neurospinal fluid, MRI shows that the fractures on my neck have healed but it is still not completely healthy and I feel pain.
