My husband and I have 10 children. We have 4 adult biological children who have families of their own. We also have 5 adopted children (two from US Foster Care, two from China and one from Bulgaria) at home. This post is about baby #10!
We began the process to adopt a sweet little girl from Bulgaria in 2024. On November 11, 2025, the Orthodox church celebrates the day of St. Minnas, known as a miraculous healer and a brave warrior. Also, on this day we passed court and our little girl became Sadie-Jayne Clark. On Nov 30th we headed to Bulgaria to pick her up to bring her home to her forever family.
She is 4 years old, wears size 3 months clothes, wears a preemie size diaper (which they don’t have so we buy size 1 that are too big) and is only 11 pounds.
On Dec 3, we were informed by her orphanage that she was sick and has been sick for a couple weeks. They advised us to seek medical help in Sofia. On Dec 5, this sweet girl was placed in our arms at the orphanage to live forever in our family.
We immediately knew that she was not herself. We later found out they had given her valium before they gave her to us. She quickly showed signs of distress. We flew to Sofia and took her right to the hospital. Within minutes there was 10 people in the room rushing around before they wisked her off to ICU. We waited hours before we got an update.
Within the next couple days she stopped breathing and was intubated, with trachea and ventilator. Then the doctors at the hospital caused a blood clot in her leg. The next day they transferred her to the Pediatric Cardiac Hospital where they were able to have surgery to remove the blood clot. It was a success but she was still on the trachea, intubated and ventilator. The Bulgarian Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, who performed her two procedures, was so gentle and excellent with us and we appreciate him. She has severe anemia and has already had two blood transfusions. She also has pneumonia. She is not producing a lot of the things her body needs to produce. She is black and blue all over from the anemia and the needle holes from the other hospital. She now has a PICC line in. She is also severely sedated. She is medically fragile and has endured a long, difficult journey in institutional care. Despite her challenges, she radiates resilience and joy, and we are determined to give her the loving family and medical support she deserves.
She has many diagnosis but Bulgaria has never had a child with genetics like hers and are unsure how to take care of her. (Directly from a Doctor in Varna, BG).
We are now facing the final, urgent step: we are IN Bulgaria to bring her home. Because of her medical condition, Sadie-Jayne cannot safely fly without trained medical staff accompanying her.
She may have to be transferred back to the original hospital on Monday. The Intensive Care Units are NOT sterile in Bulgaria and we are worried that she is not improving because of the conditions and limited medical knowledge. The ICU is rusty, dirty and reeks of cigarette smoke. My girl is also immunocompromised and needs a sterile environment so she can get better. We only get 15-30 minutes a day with her.
The cost of this specialized travel is significant, (over $139,970.00) and we are working tirelessly trying to figure out what we can safely do for her so she can arrive in the United States safely and begin receiving the care she needs.
We are humbly asking if you might be able to help—whether through financial support, connecting us with resources, or amplifying our story so we can secure the medical transport Sadie-Jayne requires.
Time is critical, and every day matters for her health and future. We would be honored to share more details about her medical needs, our fundraising efforts, and the logistics we are navigating.
Thank you for being a part of our journey to bring Sadie-Jayne home safely.
