This is Darina or, as we all call her, DARI.

Dari is only 39 years old, a mother of two wonderful children who unfortunately suffers from a brain tumor.

Fourteen years ago, this young and cheerful girl, then only 25 years old, managed to fight it once - after a severe cranio-brain surgery, radiation and a long three-year treatment. All this time, despite the difficulties and ailments, the smile never left her face. She knew and believed that everything would be okay. And it did!

Until a year ago, when the cancer returned again. This time it was Glioblastoma, a malignant, highly invasive brain tumor that grows and spreads to adjacent brain tissue terribly quickly.

Today, Dari cannot undergo surgery because the tumor is localized in the plexus at the centers for movement, speech and other vital functions. The allowable dose of radiotherapy has been administered and chemotherapy has been prescribed. Unfortunately this treatment was insufficient and her condition deteriorated rapidly. She gets daily musculoskeletal attacks, seizures without loss of consciousness, muscle convulsions and spasms.

After consultation with three professors in Turkey, Dari was offered treatment with venous therapy, which fortunately can be administered in Bulgaria but is expensive. Dari's chances are to reduce the outflow that is currently making every next step difficult. Consultations about possible treatment with a gamma or cyber knife follow.

At this stage Dari has been scheduled for 10 infusions every 3 weeks, at a total cost of 28,0000 - 30,000 leva. For this diagnosis, the health insurance in Bulgaria does not cover the drug Avastin (Bevacizumab) needed for the infusions because there is no protocol of action written down by the European Health Service. In addition, Dari takes monthly supplements (700-800 leva per month) to keep her body strong to cope with all the therapies. So far we are covering all this and will continue to pay for the supplements ourselves, but we need some financial help for the infusions.

Periodically an MRI will be done to monitor the formation. When shrinkage occurs (the much dreamed of improvement) Dari will be able to travel to Turkey for follow-up therapy. The cost of these future therapies is not yet known as it all depends on the dynamics with which the formation responds to Avastin treatment.

Against all odds, our Dari is still the same smiling and cheerful person, and still looking forward with the same hope! In the hope that she will beat it again!
