Face to face with the pain...

Lack of choice, fear, terror, helplessness.

There is nothing more frightening than the darkened eyes of a child, the devastated soul, the life barely begun.

VICTOR is a beautiful, sunny boy, full of dreams and plans for the future. Until the first days of 2021. Then he is 15. His life collapses in an instant. Literally.

Osteosarcoma of the right tibia- a rare, life-threatening cancer. In Victor, with multiple metastases to the lungs.

We'll spare you the emotional side of the story...

VICTOR begins treatment in a hospital in Varna. With high hopes for a cure. Until the moment comes when he has to have surgery on his leg and have the tumor removed. Then the family gets the next ( alas,not the last) "slap". Varna and Sofia doctors agree that the leg needs to be amputated. Another opinion is sought. There is an answer from a hospital in Turkey. The family seeks help from the NHIF, and gets DENIED!

Thanks to people on social media, treatment started at ACIBADEM Hospital, Maslak, Istanbul. Surgery was done to remove the tumor without amputating the leg. A complicated, difficult operation. An artificial prosthesis was inserted. Multiple chemotherapies followed. Two lung surgeries were also done. Again, chemotherapy. All this over two and a half years. Treatment by then was going in the right direction and was under control. The scatters that were left after the surgeries (too many and too small to remove surgically) are now inactive from the chemo at this stage. And days before Victor turns 18 , he hears the much-anticipated news that treatment is over. There is no better gift for his coming of age! Two and a half years, every day, every hour, a brutal struggle!

But the joy is only for two months. At another check-up (July 2023), it turns out that the Cancer is back. Multiple NEW and activated OLD dissections. Same day new treatment begins. Since then, eight new courses of intravenous chemotherapy have been given. Victor also takes oral chemotherapy daily. Everything going forward will depend on Victor's condition and the response to the disease, as it is quite aggressive and variable and often requires a change of treatment approach.
