Usually at the end of the summer, parents of students start making lists and organizing the procurement of everything necessary for the new school year. But life is such that not all students have parents and relatives to take care of them.

That's why we are organizing a fundraiser for the basic school needs of the 14 children and youth without parents from the municipal Transitional Housing in the district of Kiev. The 14 children from the residential shelters in Gorna Banya in Sofia.

The sad truth is that the children without parents who live in the Transitional Housing only have a roof over their heads and food provided by the Municipality. For everything else, they rely on the goodwill of donors - from underwear, clothes and shoes to pens and pencil sharpeners, notebooks and possibly some refreshing ice cream. If there's a buck or two left over, of course...

It is clear that the beginning of the school year is associated with quite a few expenses - school supplies, backpacks, sportswear and what not. By far, this is one of the biggest and most systemic difficulties that the home's leadership faces annually - the lack of funds for basic student needs. And when additional tutoring and after-school activities have to be provided, the situation becomes even more complicated.

We have calculated that for a peaceful, materially secure and waste-free start of the school year for all 14 children from the home we need 4800 leva. This will cover the basic needs - notebooks, writing materials, teaching aids, backpacks, clothing and shoes for sports, as well as other seemingly small but important items and supplies. Every parent is aware that expenses are not a one-time occurrence in the days before September 15 - spontaneous needs arise year-round, and we have a strong desire to provide peace of mind for the children and the home's leadership for the months ahead. The amount also includes the service costs of the campaign - fees to donation platforms, sponsored content on social media and the cost of the team driving the initiatives.

The transitional homes are family-type accommodation centres run by the Metropolitan Municipality for children without parental care. Fourteen children and young people aged 16 to 18 live in the two homes. All of the children are in education and some of the older children work part-time.
