I am no longer living - I am merely surviving. Every day is a battle for the most basic human needs. I struggle to breathe, I cannot sleep for more than a couple of hours at a time, and even swallowing a sip of water can leave me choking.

This suffering has stolen far more than my health. It has taken away my independence, my dignity, and the life I once knew. A man who spent his entire career helping others has become completely dependent on the people he loves. Before my illness, I worked as a social worker, dedicating my life to caring for people living with tuberculosis and HIV and supporting women who had survived domestic violence. Today, I fight for every single breath.

My body has been ravaged by years of constant exhaustion, chronic malnutrition, and severe dehydration. The medications that were meant to help me instead caused serious neurological damage, leaving me weaker and more fragile with each passing day.

Behind the walls of our home, another life has been placed on hold. My daughter, a qualified nurse, has known no adulthood free from caregiving. Since she was just 22 years old, she has fed me, supported me through violent episodes of vomiting caused by my spasms, and stayed awake beside me through endless nights when I managed to sleep for no more than two hours.

The cause of this devastating reality is a rare and relentless condition - chronic intractable hiccups. For the past fifteen years, my body has been trapped in continuous, violent hiccups that make it almost impossible to breathe, sleep, eat, or drink without suffering.

Today, there is finally hope. Specialists in the United States are ready to admit me for a comprehensive evaluation and specialized treatment aimed at calming my nervous system. This is my only chance to breathe without pain, regain my independence, and, one day, return to helping others as I once did.

The proforma invoice for the examinations and treatment, which must be paid by the end of August, is far beyond what my family can afford.
