Rehabilitation of Cosmas’s house

My name is Nassaazi Deborah, a community worker with Kyegonza Local Government in Uganda. I work closely with local leaders to identify elderly people above 80 years who benefit from the government program SAGE (Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment). Through this program, elderly individuals receive €5.80 per month, which is distributed every three months, totaling €17.40.

However, I have found that this amount is often not sufficient for many elderly people, especially those who no longer have a stable source of income and still carry family responsibilities.

One case that deeply touched me is that of Mr. Luwaga, a 92-year-old man. He lives with his wife and three young children. He also has five older children from his late wife, but due to financial challenges in the past, he was unable to support their education, and they are also struggling in life while trying to support him as much as they can.

When I first met Mr. Luwaga in 2021, I realized that the SAGE grant could not sustain his household needs even for a short time. He lives in a very poor condition, in a muddy house with weak structures, including worn-out wooden doors that do not provide proper safety. Despite these conditions, the family continues to stay there because they have no alternative.

Seeing his situation, I started a small campaign among friends to support him, and we have made some progress. However, the house still requires significant effort and resources to be properly completed.

Mr. Luwaga looks up to me for support, especially in improving his living conditions and ensuring his family has a safer and more stable home.If supported, I will continuously share updates on the progress of the house construction, and I will gladly keep you informed about every step.
