While the campaign for treatment in Turkey was underway, Koki received unexpected but long-awaited news -

approval for surgery in the United States, at a specialized hospital in St. Louis.

This was not just any surgery.

It's a complex intervention on his spine. The place where the disease keeps him pinned down. The procedure is called a selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR), a complex and delicate neurosurgery that can relax his spastic legs, freeing his body from the constant tension and pain.

And then -

get him up.

Get him back on his feet.

Doctors believe in this and give very good prognoses. After reviewing his medical records and specially prepared videos, they are adamant that they expect Kaloyan to be ambulating with a walker after surgery and a month-long course of intensive physical therapy.
