What are the differences between a private dog shelter and a public one?

Dog shelters are organizations that house animals that have nowhere else to live. The reasons for this are different. Some of them are taken to a shelter because they are homeless or lost, but there are also those who have been abandoned by their owners due to behavioural or health problems. Shelters are places where they get shelter for a certain amount of time. Some of them are funded by the state, but most are privately owned, and the funds to build them are raised by organising donation campaigns. But what are the differences between a private dog shelter and a state-run shelter?

What is the difference between a private dog shelter and a state-run shelter?

Dogshelters are organizations that, in addition to sheltering stray and abandoned animals, they regulate their numbers, their capture, and enable their adoption by new owners. There are two types of dog shelters in our country, which differ significantly from each other.

State dog shelters

State dog shelters, also called city shelters, are established by the state and receive funding from the state budget. In many cases, however, these funds are not nearly enough to support the animals. The dogs that are sheltered in state shelters are most often strays that were captured on the street or dogs that were pets but were adopted at the request of their owners. It is the policy of these shelters to regulate the number of animals taken in by euthanizing those that have been in the shelter for a very long time.

Private dog shelters

Private dog shelters are community organizations created by volunteers and people who are not indifferent to the problem of homeless animals. They do not receive funding from the state and can only exist thanks to the money raised through donation campaigns. This is most often done through a donation site where dog lovers and caring people collect money for their upkeep. Private dog shelters care for those animals that really need help. Most often these are the sick and injured dogs from the city streets, or those who have fallen victim to bad people or unreliable owners who do not want to take care of them.

What is the role of Pavel Andreev Foundation?

We at Pavel Andreev Foundation believe in kindness and humanity and that people are not indifferent to the plight of homeless and rejected dogs who need a lot of care and love. On our page PavelAndreev.ORG there is information about many charity campaigns that aim to raise funds to help animals in private shelters. With these campaigns we aim to contribute to the common good of dogs and we urge everyone to actively participate in solving their problems, creating a better environment and living conditions.

An example of such a campaign is Save Flynn's leg. He needed an arthrodesis to fix his leg in the right position so he could move again.

The needs of the shelters from donations

Statistics show that over the years the number of dogs in private shelters is increasing. Unfortunately, very few of these animals find a new home and a new family. Staying in the shelter, they need food and a lot of care, which leads to the need for funding. The good news is that there are many ways to help shelter dogs, thanks to fundraisers and charity campaig ns that raise money for animals.

How to help dogs in shelters

There are many ways that anyone can help the dogs in shelters. To help improve their lives, you can volunteer at the shelter in your city, and if you can't or don't have time to do so, you can donate money or goods to help keep them safe.

Become a volunteer

One way to help shelter dogs is to volunteer. Ask around and find out where there is a similar organisation in your area and research what their needs are. The variety of jobs available depends on the needs of the shelter, but will also be tailored to your skills. These organizations are most often looking for people to socialize and train dogs, or those who will serve the shelter's clients to help potential adopters choose the right dog for them. Other tasks you can do at the dog shelter that you can volunteer for are:

  • Walking the dogs;
  • Bathing the dogs to maintain good hygiene;
  • Grooming the dogs, to build the necessary habits;
  • Providing veterinary care to keep the dogs healthy;
  • Keeping the dogs looking good.

Dog shelters also very often need help with fundraising, marketing and other administrative activities. If you have the necessary knowledge and experience, then you can help them with these specialized services as well.

Fundraising

In addition to volunteering, you can help shelter dogs by participating in various charitable fundraisers to help feed and care for the animals. The best way to find out what the organization needs is by going on site. Take note of the number of animals in the shelter, the conditions they live in and whether they are being cared for properly. Ask them what they need. This could be different items, food or medicine needed for medical care. In addition to these, the dog shelter may also need funds to renovate the building or to build a new building. Here are a few different charity ideas you can take advantage of:

Organize a sale

To raise funds for the dog shelter, you can organize a rummage sale of old and unwanted items or have a bake sale at school and donate the money to the dog shelter.

Organize a donation campaign

To raise funds for a dog shelter, you can set up a donation website to appeal for funding for the organisation. You can also do this by contacting us and discussing your intentions with Pavel Andreev, who is the founder of the Pavel Andreev Foundation, a charity. We will give you many ideas for charity and help you to make your noble cause a reality.

As a volunteer or with fundraising, you can help not only shelter dogs, but also homeless animals in need. Get involved in various projects and help these innocent creatures find their new home and a new family where they can be raised with lots of attention, care and love.
