What do homeless people do when they are sick?
Apart from the medical services that I can get from time to time, and almost exclusively from NGOs, sometimes they also have to go to the emergency room when they are in serious condition. Most of them, however, have no papers of legitimization, no health insurance, no money and everything else that in modern society would be a reason to be rejected or expelled.
The harsh conditions associated with life on the streets, the constant stress, the social marginalisation and the trauma suffered make the onset of mental or behavioural disorders almost inevitable, and the mental health services available are also limited. Why don't homeless people have IDs?
The paperwork issue adds to the list of problems that those living on the streets have. Many homeless people do not have ID, further limiting their access to the few services available. Even temporary identity documents (in some countries) are difficult to obtain. The latter expire within a year and are difficult to keep because they are paper-based.
