All the essentials about Erasmus+

The EU's Erasmus+ programme aims to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The 2021-2027 programme focuses on social inclusion, the environmental and digital transition, and promoting young people's participation in democratic life. The Erasmus+ programme supports priorities and activities that are set out in the European Education Area, the Digital Education Action Plan and the New European Agenda for Skills. The Erasmus+ programme offers opportunities for mobility and cooperation in higher education, vocational education and training, school education (including early childhood education and care), adult education, youth and sport.

Who can apply for Erasmus+?

The general rule is that participants in Erasmus+ projects must be based in EU Member States or in third countries associated to the programme. Some actions are also open to participants from third countries not associated to the programme. Natural persons constitute the main target group of the programme. The participation of these individuals is mainly mediated by organisations, institutions, bodies or groups organising activities supported by the Erasmus+ programme. The conditions for access to the programme relate to the following two groups of actors: 'participants' (individuals participating in Erasmus+ project activities who may receive part of the EU grant to cover the costs of their participation) and 'participating organisations'. The conditions of participation that apply to both participants and participating organisations depend on the country in which they are established.

Is Erasmus+ free?

Every year, organisations from all over Europe submit thousands of projects to receive financial support under the Erasmus+ programme. The Commission therefore follows a transparent evaluation procedure, which aims to award grants to the best projects:

- for the majority of the actions under the programme, all the rules and conditions for awarding grants under the programme are set out in the programme guide;

- for other actions, which are only mentioned in the Programme Guide, the rules and conditions for the award of grants are laid down in the specific calls for proposals published by or on behalf of the European Commission.

Potential participating organisations planning to submit an application can also obtain ideas and information from other reference documents.

What is covered by Erasmus+?

Any Erasmus+ student can receive funding (a grant) under the programme. A grant is financial support that aims to help with the additional mobility costs caused by differences in the cost of living abroad. Erasmus+ funding is on a monthly basis and is granted for an actual stay in the host country and employer. The amount varies for host countries within the EU - according to the standard of living in each country. It is determined for each individual academic year according to the rules of the programme. Erasmus+ funding is not intended to cover all mobility costs, but only to support the student in completing the mobility period. Grants are provided free of charge and no cost supporting documents are required for all costs of the Erasmus stay, except for travel costs and some other costs proving the actual mobility period.

What to do if you do not have enough financial resources?

Funding can be a major concern for many Erasmus+ applicants. Although the programme provides significant support, it is important to have a plan on how to manage costs that are not covered. That's why we're sharing 6 practical tips to help you secure successful funding if you don't have enough money for your uncovered costs.

Tip #1: Plan your budget carefully

Start by understanding the financial aspects of the Erasmus+ programme. Research the cost of living in your chosen destination, including rent, food, transport and other daily needs. Create a realistic budget that takes these factors into account and ensures that you will have enough money to cope.

Tip #2: Look for scholarship and grant opportunities

Many universities, organisations and even individual countries offer scholarships and grants specifically for Erasmus+ students. Explore the different options, fill in the necessary paperwork and apply for each applicable opportunity. Remember that competition can be fierce, so start early and be persistent in your efforts.

Tip #3: Work during your study abroad

Depending on local laws and regulations, you may be able to work while abroad. Even a part-time or temporary job can provide extra income to help offset unexpected expenses. Make sure you research work permit requirements and comply with any restrictions in your host country.

Tip No. 4: Share expenses with family and friends

Consider travelling with a group of acquaintances or friends who are also participating in the Erasmus+ programme. Sharing accommodation or lodging can significantly reduce accommodation costs, and sharing other expenses such as groceries and utilities can also help save money.

Tip 5: Reduce living costs

Once you arrive in the country where you'll be studying, continue to look for ways to reduce the cost of living. Compare prices when grocery shopping, use public transportation instead of taxis, and research free or low-cost activities in your area. These small savings can make a big difference over time and help you maintain a financial balance during your stay.

Tip #6: Start a crowdfunding campaign for donations

Crowdfunding is a popular way to raise funds for personal projects, and it can be especially helpful for you because you need financial assistance. To run a successful fundraising campaign, develop a clear and compelling story that explains the purpose and impact of your cause.

Remember that participating in the Erasmus+ programme is an incredible experience that opens doors to personal growth, cultural understanding and academic excellence. By following these tips and staying committed to finding creative solutions, you can overcome financial challenges and make the most of the opportunities offered by this exceptional programme.
