“Grandpa, Get Up So We Can Play”: How One Campaign From Ohrid United the Balkans

Sometimes, a story does not need translation.

“Grandpa, get up so we can play.”

These are the words behind the fundraising campaign of Mile Bejovski from Ohrid — a father and grandfather facing a serious illness while his family desperately searched for a way to help him.

His daughter launched the campaign on PavelAndreev.ORG with one simple plea: that her children would not lose their grandfather simply because the family could not afford life-saving treatment in time.

The story quickly reached people across the Balkans.

Because pain has no nationality.

And neither does kindness.

PavelAndreev.ORG is no longer just a platform used in Bulgaria. Today, it is the largest fundraising platform in Southeast Europe, helping organize successful medical and humanitarian campaigns from countries across the region — including North Macedonia, Romania, Moldova, Serbia,  and many others.

Mile’s story became another example of something powerful:
when a cause is real, people respond — no matter what language it is written in.

The photos in the campaign show a smiling grandfather playing with his grandchildren. But behind that smile was a man living with pain every day, trying to hide his suffering so the children would not be afraid.

And that is exactly what touched people.

Not the medical terminology.
Not the numbers.
But the fear that small children could lose the embrace of their grandfather too soon.

The campaign received overwhelming support, and the family later shared a short message with everyone who helped:

“Your humanity is not just help — it is hope, support, and love.”

This is the strength of a community that does not care about borders.

Because sometimes the most important thing is not where you come from.

But whether you are willing to help someone stay close to the people they love.
