Breast cancer prevention - why every woman should be well informed

Cancer is a condition in which cells in a particular part of the human body multiply uncontrollably and have extremely harmful effects over the whole body.

Of all existing cancers, breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed type of tumour in the world, after lung cancer.

Breast cancer risk factors

There are predispositions and habits that increase a person's likelihood of getting breast cancer. The main risk factors are:

  • Gender

The percentage of women at risk of developing breast cancer is much higher than that of men.

  • Age

As a person ages, the risk of breast cancer rises.

  • Personal history of breast cancer

If a man has had cancer in one breast, he has an increased risk of developing a tumor in the other breast.

  • Family history

The risk of breast cancer is higher in women who have a family history.

  • Radiation

Prolonged exposure to radiation, especially in the breast area, poses a major risk of developing breast cancer.

  • Other factors

Geriatric pregnancy, absence of pregnancy, obesity, and alcohol abuse can be attributed to this category.

Breast cancer prevention

Cancer is not a disease that proceeds on its own and without apparent cause. It is the result of related patterns. Genes, our lifestyle and environmental factors work together to increase or decrease our risk of developing the disease. Therefore, public awareness is important in preventing the development of the disease.

What we need to know about breast cancer prevention

Periodic screening is the most effective way to prevent breast cancer. Early detection of the condition and prompt initiation of treatment are the most important strategies for a favorable prognosis.

Other ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer are maintaining an optimal body weight, leading a healthy lifestyle based on a diet rich in vegetables, fruits and low-fat animal products, and regular exercise and physical activity.

  • Early breast cancer prevention and detection means hope for a longer life for 90% of women with this diagnosis!

This is why there is increasing public attention to the European Cancer Plan, which supports Member States' efforts to improve cancer control and patient care.

  • A person with breast cancer is not alone, is not excluded from society and is entitled to the best treatment!

As long as the different stages of the treatment of the disease last: diagnosis, regular medical examinations and treatments as well as recovery, the patient needs support. This support is all the more adequate the more familiar the community is with breast cancer. Therefore, it is extremely important to organise awareness-raising campaigns.

During treatment and the recovery period, support groups can provide cancer patients with information about the disease, provide moral, emotional, even financial support, so that patients can more easily overcome the physical problems, mental and social limitations that are typical of this kind of condition.

World Breast Cancer Day

1 October is International Breast Cancer Day. This is humanity's way of sounding the alarm about this disease and also drawing attention to the fact that the disease is curable when detected in time.

In this context, the month of October is dedicated to informing women about prevention methods.

Recommended strategies for early detection of breast cancer include informing the population about the first signs and symptoms and implementing screening processes, through regular specialized examinations.

Be involved, see all the campaigns and support someone in the fight against cancer.

How important it is to be informed

As we have already pointed out cancer is the second leading cause of global mortality.

Although, the incidence of breast cancer has increased over the last decade, the number of deaths has decreased because they have been diagnosed early and treatment has produced effective results.

The good news is that today breast cancer can be detected at an early stage, and for this to happen it is important to be informed.
