Hello! I am Magdalena, and I have been accepted to the world's best program in Stem Cell Medicine at the University of Cambridge, UK. However, there is a significant obstacle to attending: the program costs £ 60,000, or ~ €70,000. I have already secured €20,000 through scholarships, family support, and my own savings. I am actively searching for other sources of funding and launching this campaign to close the remaining gap, because I refuse to let financial constraints prevent me from pursuing work that could change lives.
Where This Journey Began
I grew up in Varna, Bulgaria, immersed in both the arts and sciences. My love for music led me to Neuroscience - I became fascinated by how our nervous systems create the experiences that make us feel alive: the senses that build our reality, movement, learning, integration of information, creativity, etc.
Patient cases and a profound sense of empathy shaped my clinical focus, starting with Jacqueline du Pré, the legendary cellist. Her career was cut short by multiple sclerosis at age 28. I remember reading about one devastating night when she was scheduled to perform, only to cancel moments before - she could no longer feel her fingers.
That story haunted me. How could such a brilliant, passionate, and joyful person be destined to such a tragedy? How can we prevent that from happening again?
I received a full-ride scholarship to study in the United States - an opportunity that transformed my life. At Ramapo College, I embraced every opportunity and graduated summa cum laude in May 2026. Some of my achievements include:
Neuroscience Major Award (2025-2026)
Sigma Xi membership (The Scientific Research Honor Society)
Recipient of 3 prestigious internal fellowships
Semi-finalist for the Global Rhodes Scholarship - one of the most prestigious scholarships in the world
Graduation from the Ramapo College Honors College
Serving as a laboratory manager and principal investigator (PI)
Teaching science at a college and high school level
Presenting research at national and international conferences
2 x recipient of the President’s coin for academic excellence
Advocating for accessible science through volunteering
Establishing the first Bulgarian Brain Bee Neuroscience competition as the official National coordinator for the International Brain Bee - the largest Neuroscience initiative for high school students in the world
Developing a project for the Microsoft Imagine Cup, the global student startup competition
Singing in Carnegie Hall as part of the National Masterwork Chorus
Developing my musicianship through participation in jazz ensembles, chamber music groups, choirs, and my own solo recitals
Leading two academic clubs
Completing a summer internship at an In Vitro Fertilization clinic
Conducting research in Neurophysiology, Neuroaesthetics, Genetic engineering, and Bioinformatics
Regenerative medicine is no longer science fiction. It's real, it's happening now, and it works.
Stem cell transplants have already achieved substantial success in treating blood cancers like AML and Hodgkin lymphoma. We're on the cusp of breakthrough treatments for:
Spinal cord injury - restoring movement and sensation to people with paralysis
Multiple sclerosis - halting the progression of a disease that affects 2.8 million people worldwide
Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions
Cambridge isn't just any program. It's the epicenter of regenerative medicine research. The infrastructure - the Stem Cell Institute, the Centre for Myelin Repair, collaborations with Cambridge University Hospitals - exists nowhere else in this combination.
I don't come from a wealthy family. My parents are incredibly supportive. They have already contributed €15,000, which is a significant sacrifice for them. I have saved €5,000 from scholarships and part-time work.
That gets me to €20,000. The fees for Cambridge are €70,000.
Loans after Brexit are not a viable option for a European student like me. Deferral is also not permitted.
So I'm launching this campaign. I'm reaching out to people who believe in this work to help me close the gap.
Here's the thing I want you to know: If I don't raise the money and can't go to Cambridge, I am committing to donate every euro collected to stem cell research anyway. I'm not doing this to guarantee my attendance. I'm doing this because I believe in the work, and I'd rather that money go toward research than sit unused.
If you give €50, it goes toward buying reagents for experiments.
If you give €500, it helps cover a semester of lab fees.
If you give €5,000, you're essentially sponsoring a month of my research.
But more than the money itself, your support tells me that you believe this work is worth doing. That you're willing to bet on a young scientist who is motivated to work hard to get us to a better place.
That means more than you probably realize.
Share this if it resonates with you. Sometimes the best support is just telling other people about it.
And if you can't donate, that's okay too. Thank you for your warm thoughts and encouragement.
